Heading to Cornwall for a romantic break? Good idea! Our county is a wonderful choice when you’re looking to spend time away just the two of you, with beautiful landscape, wonderful food, and a whole host of special experiences.

There are plenty of things to do in Cornwall for couples, but there are also some stunning romantic locations that are perfect for special moments (proposal, anyone?), occasions like anniversaries, or just for being together.

We’ve rounded up our top most romantic spots in Cornwall so that you can make your itinerary as lovely as can be.

Pedn Vounder

If a coastal paradise sounds like your idea of romance, Pedn Vounder beach, near Penzance, is a must-visit. Think utterly beautiful turquoise waters trimmed with a glorious white sand beach, all set amongst dramatic cliffs.

If you’re an avid social media user, you may recognise it from Instagram, where it’s seen a lot of attention over the past few years for its picture-perfect nature. TV fans might also know that it featured in Poldark!

If you plan on visiting, it’s worth noting that there are no facilities, but this is what gives it, its unspoilt appearance. That’s not to say that it doesn’t get busy, as in recent years it’s been a popular destination over the summer months. It’s also – unofficially – a nudist beach, although we recommend being clothed on your journey from the car to the beach, as it can be tricky to get down from the cliffs! Those with good fitness and coordination will get on just fine with the walk.

The sand is completely covered at high tide, so check tide times when planning a visit.

Polperro, Cornwall

Polperro

On Cornwall’s south coast, the picturesque fishing village of Polperro sits nestled in a ravine. Its cottages are dotted against the hillside, all centering around a pretty harbour.

Polperro is quaint and sheltered, with plenty of places to enjoy a meal or a drink together, making it a perfect day out for couples. There’s a small and very lovely beach, but part of the charm is just wandering, taking in the white houses with coastal blue doors and window frames.

If views are your thing, walk the coastal path on either side of the village (the South West Coast Path passes through it) to be able to look back at a fantastic view over the harbour.

To explore, there is a circular walk from Helford village – for which you will benefit from wearing walking boots or another kind of sensible footwear – but it can also be discovered by boats rented from Helford Riverboats or guided kayak tour.

It’s best at high tide, and boasts beautiful sunrises and sunsets. An excellent inclusion on any romantic getaway itinerary.

Golitha Falls, Cornwall

Golitha Falls

The National Nature Reserve of Golitha Falls, not too far from Liskeard and close to Bodmin Moor, is very much like something out of a fairytale.

It is made up of a series of cascades and small waterfalls, rather than any large drops, all meandering through lush ancient woodland covered in a plethora of lovely flowers like bluebells and wood anemone, as well as lots of lichen and moss.

The reserve has a selection different walking trails to help you explore, and even a few spots along the way to take a dip and paddle in the water.

Boscastle

Boscastle, one of Cornwall’s fishing villages, simply exudes charm. It makes for an intimate and peaceful escape, full of historic buildings, natural beauty and fishing boats bobbing gently in the water.

It has its own romantic literary connections too; Boscastle is situated in the wooded Valency Valley, a place steeped in artistic associations, including being linked to Thomas Hardy, who fell in love with his future wife while visiting.

Aside from exploring the surrounding area, the village itself allows you to wander cobblestone streets and soak up a cosy and unspoilt atmosphere, perfect for a date day.

St Nectan's Glen, Cornwall

St Nectan’s Glen

Immerse yourselves in the romance of nature at St Nectan’s Glen, an area of outstanding natural beauty that makes the perfect setting for a peaceful woodland walk.

This natural wonder is found in a wooded valley that the River Trevillet flows through, near Tintagel, North Cornwall. The whole area is ideal for a hand in hand stroll; while some areas of the walk can be a little tricky at times, there are plenty of spots that allow a moment of serenity. During your walk you will reach St Nectan’s Kieve, a mesmerising sixty foot waterfall that flows through a hole in the rocks.

Tintagel

Those keen on myths and legends will be drawn to the romance and history of Tintagel, a magical destination amidst dramatic coastline and breathtaking scenery. Tintagel itself is a village, but it is famous for Tintagel Castle, which attracts those seeking Cornish legends culture in a romantic setting for its connections with King Arthur.

The village itself is utterly charming, and the setting is timeless. For those visiting the castle, there are plenty of spots full of allure; Tintagel footbridge connects the mainland to the castle island and has an adventurous feel, and Merlin’s Cave, located below the castle, is full of romantic mysticism. The sunsets are excellent from this part of the coast, so it also makes a fantastic place to be when the day is coming to an end.

Bedruthan Steps, Cornwall

Bedruthan Steps

An iconic Cornish destination, it would be remiss not to mention the Bedruthan Steps when talking about the county’s most romantic spots. The ‘steps’ themselves are sea stacks, striking rock formations on the beach, which appear to be protruding out of the water depending on the tide, making for awe-inspiring views.

The beach that they sit on is currently not accessible, but if you visit safely this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t see them for yourselves by visiting Carnewas, the area of coastline above the beach; sharing these clifftop views with your partner is certainly an extra special experience.

St Michael’s Mount

St Michael’s Mount is the place to head for a day together with a variety of fairytale-style settings. This tidal island, 500 metres from Marazion on the mainland, is home to an historic castle and gardens.

It’s an irresistable location with spectacular views from the castle battlements, and the opportunity to explore terraced gardens which mix subtropical flower beds with the drama of a cliff face.

You can arrive by boat, or walk across the cobbled causeway at low tide – a very ‘Wizard of Oz’ style experience that will definitely have you both feeling like you’re in your very own old Hollywood film.

Port Isaac, Cornwall

Port Isaac

For a quintessentially Cornish location that’s a little like stepping back in time, the picture-perfect harbour of Port Isaac is a must. The romance to be found in this fishing village is all about soaking everything in and enjoying the charm of your surroundings.

Visitors tend to be enchanted by the narrow winding streets, the medieval harbour, and the stunning surrounding landscape – and there are great date opportunities here for seafood lovers, as there is some exceptional seafood to be had including both fine dining and casual options.

And of course, if you are a Doc Martin fan, you’ll be able to recognise and enjoy the filming locations.

Kynance Cove

Thought of as not just one of the best beaches in Cornwall, but one of the best beaches in the country as a whole, it’s clear to see why Kynance Cove is so well-loved.

Azure waters, impressive rock stacks and stunning scenery make for the ideal spot for a picnic together with a view, and it makes a wonderful backdrop for a romantic moment like an anniversary or proposal.

While it is undeniably popular and can get busy, something about the location and landscape retains a sense of seclusion, helping Kynance Cove to remain a broadly tranquil setting unless you visit at the height of summer.

St Agnes Head, Cornwall

St Agnes Head

On the north coast of Cornwall, around ten miles south west of Newquay, is St Agnes Head, a remote and peaceful location that is wonderful for walking and soaking in nature.

This special area above the Atlantic is carpeted by heather and gorse when the season is right, and the air is full of the sounds of insects and birds. There are spectacular views to be had here, and as much tranquility as you like – just drop into the friendly village of St Agnes if you’re looking for amenities.

St Agnes Head is also excellent for stargazing, if a night under the stars with your love sounds appealing.

Zennor

A village on the Atlantic coast nestled in between rocky cliffs and rugged moors, Zennor is a captivating village with an undeniably romantic quality. Perhaps it is the history of the place; a long-closed quarry once provided the granite used to build some of Cornwall’s most loved destinations, including St Ives, and DH Lawrence once stayed here whilst writing Women in Love.

Or maybe it’s the peace. Zennor has a population of about 200, and its location in amongst wild landscapes gives it a tranquil quality, with quiet beaches and great walks. Try the Zennor Head walk from the village, a 2.4km loop which lets you take in views both out to sea and inland.

Bodmin Moor, Cornwall

Bodmin Moor

For those seeking a wild and rugged romance straight from a nineteenth century novel, don’t miss Bodmin Moor. Many pass through or by it on the way to North Cornwall’s popular towns and attractions, but the moor itself is well worth a visit.

This 208 square kilometres of nature is home to around 40 tors and forms the backdrop for some of Cornwall’s most famous and beautiful views. Large amounts of it are open access land, and there are plentiful walking trails to explore. Unsurprisingly, there’s also a lot of folklore surrounding this area of the county.

What makes Bodmin Moor worthy of a spot on a list of Cornwall’s most romantic locations is its ability to make you feel far removed from civilisation, like the only people in the world (while still in fact being within easy reach of pubs, shops and necessities). We encourage you to get out and enjoy the natural beauty of the place.

The Minack Theatre

Carved into the cliff four miles from Land’s End is the world-famous Minack Theatre, an open-air venue that looks out to sea with Porthcurno Beach beneath it.

This unique place is of course a great spot to see a show or performance – booking tickets to a show under the stars makes a great evening out for couples – but it’s also a destination in and of itself. The theatre is worth experiencing even without a single actor or performer present – and the gardens and views are stunning too.

Botallack

The brooding coastal location of Botallack is full of dark romanticism. A Cornish Mining World Heritage Site that is in the care of the National Trust, here you can see mining structures standing dramatically against the water. Despite the powerful image it creates, Botallack is somehow still a very peaceful spot, and is stunning in every weather condition.

It forms part of the South West Coast Path, so is ideal for incorporating into a walk. Plus – you guessed it – it’s another Poldark filming location.

Porthgwarra Beach, Cornwall

Porthgwarra Beach

Previously a fishing cove and now a peaceful and picturesque inlet, Porthgwarra Cove is less of a seaside visit and more of a sight to behold. If you’re looking for a lovely spot for a special moment, this is it.

There is a small patch of beach at low tide that disappears at high tide, but it is worth a visit either way; park at the pay and display car park just above the beach and head to the lookout station at Gwennap Head just a wander away, where you can look out at the sea crashing against the granite cliffs and take in the views.

It’s a popular spot for birdwatching if that interests you, but it doesn’t matter too much that there is not anything in particular to ‘do’ here but take in the scenery and the ambience – especially with the one you love.
