What Mayday means to me – By Jill Biddle
Mayday is the sound of drums
A call I cant ignore,
The singing of the night time song
At many a special door.
The children’s Oss at early morn
Each bright and shining face.
The flowers and leaves that deck the town,
The Maypole in its place.
♥♥
Mayday is the red and blue,
The Osses fierce and black
The song that calls “unite, unite”
For summer days are back.
The Teaser and the playing bands
The ancient songs we sing,
“Oh where’s St George, oh where is he?”
Knees bent the wild shouts ring
♥♥
Mayday is the jolly crowds
That come from miles around,
The greetings and the happy smiles
That fill this little town.
The Folks who come across the world
This special day to share,
The memory of times gone by
Loved ones no longer there.
♥♥
Mayday’s up at Prideaux Place
To dance before the hall,
Watched by the crowds of happy folks
Who follow the musics call.
The evening when the Osses meet
and the “battle” in the square,
then drums and song unite unite
For summers surely here.
♥♥
The day is done each “Oss” Returns
To dance the final dance
To bid farewell, its head bowed low,
No more to kick and prance.
Oh, thank you Padstow for this day,
Your welcome and your cheer
The drums are gone, our feet are still,
but we’ll be back next year
